Higgins & Rose is a modern-day collaboration twixt science and conservation within apiculture. The role and the evolution of today’s honeybee is an extraordinary and an important one, not only in relation pollination but also in the protection and understanding of the less prolific bee species. From what we can understand and learn from the honeybee and it’s ecological niches, the knock-on effects of such knowledge will only benefit other pollinators and their environmental interactions.

While the British Isles are globally important for Earth’s fauna and flora, equally they are one of the most nature depleted areas in the world!! Now is this properly, seriously, bad news. Hence, never has there been a more crucial and important time to invest in the natural world that’s on our doorstep.

Whilst the original interest of Higgins & Rose was primarily the study of insect natural history, this has now been developed and honed into bee breeding, pollination and conservation projects, while utilising some of the best honeybee genetics available the world over. Our bees even come with at least seven generation pedigrees.

Here at Higgins & Rose, we breed the Buckfast signature of honeybee, and breed for traits such as disease resistance, gentleness, honey production and a disinclination to swarm.

Albeit, one minor inconvenience arising from these bee breeding and conservation projects, is the various amounts of unique and slightly differing honeys and waxes from our apiaries located in and around Sherwood Forest.
