If you’ve been given a gift of our local raw honey from Nottinghamshire and are wondering how to use it, here are some tempting suggestions for flavour-packed goodness!
Raw honey means that it is straight from the hive in its purest form, unfiltered and not heat treated. This means that it’s packed full of all the nutritional goodness that busy bees work hard all summer to create. For example, raw honey contains enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that can support digestion and the immune system. It also tastes great!
Drizzle it on porridge or toast
The classic use of honey is to drizzle it on porridge, but it also tastes great on toast as an alternative to jam or peanut butter.
Sweeten your morning brew
If you usually add sugar or a sweetener to your morning tea or coffee, try stirring in a spoonful of honey instead. This will create a pleasing smooth texture and provide more depth of flavour than sugar alone. Honey also tastes amazing when paired with herbal or fruit teas, particularly lemon or mint.
Use it to make salad dressings
Honey provides a lovely counterbalance to acidic vinaigrette salad dressings. Combine it with a tablespoon of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a sprinkle of fresh herbs for a simple but delicious salad dressing.
Use it as a marinade or glaze for meat
Honey caramalises when cooked, so it’s ideal for adding a glaze to roast meats, grilled salmon or root vegetables. Try mixing it with garlic, soy sauce or lemon juice and marinading raw fish or meat in the fridge for a few hours before cooking for a rich and flavoursome dish.
Use it in baking
Honey is a healthier alternative to sugar or syrup as an ingredient for cakes, biscuits and flapjacks – so don’t be afraid to do some kitchen experiments with your store cupboard ingredients!
