If you’ve ever stood in the baking aisle surrounded by artificial food dyes and thought, surely there’s a less nuclear way to do Halloween, this one’s for you.
Our Bloody Brilliant Honey Splatter is a completely natural edible fake blood recipe made from two simple ingredients: our proper, pure runny honey and beetroot powder. It’s gloriously gory, totally edible, and free from all the artificial colours and additives found in store bought edible fake blood.
This isn’t just a fun Halloween recipe – it’s also a little nod to nature. Perfect consistency from honey, authentic colour from beetroot – two ingredients that prove you don’t need fluorescent gels to create a gloriously gruesome effect. Together, they make something beautifully horrifying (and surprisingly good for you).
🍯 Why Honey and Beetroot?
Because they do the job better than anything synthetic.
Honey isn’t just there for sweetness – it’s packed with antioxidants and has natural antibacterial properties. It’s soothing, hydrating, and even helps preserve your spooky syrup for a few days. If you’re going to make a mess, you might as well make it a nutritionally sound one.
Beetroot powder brings its own party tricks. It’s full of vitamins and minerals like folate, potassium and iron, and it’s known for supporting healthy blood flow, reducing inflammation, and giving a natural boost of energy. Basically, it’s nature’s way of saying: “You can have your gore and feel good about it too.”
The honey gives that perfect, sticky consistency, while beetroot brings the deep, authentic colour – together, they create a glossy, scarlet syrup that looks suspiciously realistic, tastes deliciously sweet and earthy, and can be drizzled, dipped or splattered onto just about anything.

🍯 You’ll need:
- 2-3 tbsp runny honey
- 1½ tsp beetroot powder
- 1-2 tsp water
- Optional: a few drops of lemon juice (for brightness) or a pinch of cocoa powder (for a darker tone)
Mix, stir, drizzle, splatter. It’s natural, it’s delicious, and it’s just the right side of creepy.

Method
1️⃣ Mix the honey and beetroot powder.
Stir until the colour is evenly combined and deep crimson. It’ll be thick at first – that’s exactly what you want.
2️⃣ Add the water slowly.
Drizzle it in a little at a time, stirring between each addition, until you reach your perfect blood-like consistency. Thick and sticky for drips, or thinner if you’re after that “splatter across the crime scene” look.
3️⃣ Adjust the colour. (optional)
Add a drop of lemon juice to brighten it up or a pinch of cocoa powder for something moodier. The cocoa takes away the pink tones and gives it a more realistic, film-set red.
4️⃣ Decorate.
Use a honey dipper to drip, ooze and splatter your edible fake blood onto your halloween bakes, be it witches fingers, glass shard cupcakes or vampire bat biscuits, the possibilities are endless.
5️⃣ Store it (if you must).
Keep any leftovers in a small jar in the fridge for up to a week. It’ll thicken slightly over time – a bit like, well… never mind.

🐝 The Final Drip
This Bloody Brilliant Honey Ooze is sticky, sweet, slightly earthy and ridiculously satisfying to make. It’s a crowd-pleaser for kids, adults and anyone who enjoys a bit of edible theatre.
So this Halloween, skip the shop-bought toxic slime and mix up something a little more… natural.
No food dye. No nonsense.
Just gory (but gorgeous) honey magic🩸
