Raw English Honey from Nottinghamshire - Our Story

Higgins & Rose is a modern-day collaboration twixt science and conservation within apiculture. Based in Nottinghamshire, we produce raw English honey while focusing on sustainable bee breeding and pollination research.

The role and evolution of today’s honeybee is both extraordinary and important — not only in relation to pollination but also in the protection and understanding of the less prolific native bee species. From what we can learn from the honeybee and its ecological niches, both direct and associated, the knock-on effects of such knowledge will only benefit other pollinators and their environmental interactions.

While the British Isles are globally important for Earth’s fauna and flora, they are also among the most nature-depleted areas in the world. So grave is the situation, never has there been a more crucial time to invest in the natural world on our doorstep.

Whilst the original interest of Higgins & Rose was primarily the generalist study of insect natural history, our work has since evolved into bee breeding, pollination and conservation projects, utilising some of the finest honeybee genetics available worldwide. Our Breeder Queen bees even come with at least a seven-generation pedigree.

Here at Higgins & Rose, we breed the Buckfast line of honeybee, selecting for traits such as fecundity, disease resistance, gentleness, honey production, and a disinclination to swarm.

Albeit, one minor inconvenience arising from these bee breeding and conservation projects is the surplus of unique and slightly differing raw English honeys and waxes from our Nottinghamshire apiaries – each batch distinct, each season a reflection of its landscape.

Why Buy Our Produce?

Organic honey with almost a thousand years of unchanged flavours. If you want something modern but old, this honey is for you.

Our Apiaries

Our Apiaries are located in and around Sherwood Forest and Heather Heath which predates the formation the royal hunting forest of Sherwood circa 1066AD.

Harvesting

Our bees are our number one priority. We harvest only a small percentage of the honey that is produced, ensuring our bees have a strong, healthy store of honey to see them through the winter months.

Our Bees

We breed the Buckfast signature of honeybee, and breed for traits such as disease resistance, gentleness, honey production and a disinclination to swarm. The best of the best.

Care

As responsible Beekeepers, we have a duty of care to the insects we care for and the people who are in our community.

Pollen

Our pollen is dried, bagged and available as a natural antihistamine for Hayfever sufferers. Sold as natural granules, you can measure out and take by the spoonful or add to foods like granola or yogurt.

Raw & Organic

All of our honey is raw (unpasturised), cold extracted from the hives with minimal interference to the bees as possible. Our organic honey comes from the legendary Sherwood forest and surrounding heathland, untouched by pesticides or chemicals.
